Life in EYFS at KAPSH
At KAPSH we cater for children from three to five years old. Our Nursery offers morning, afternoon and full day provision, as well as two Reception classes. Our Early Years Department promotes high quality teaching and learning to ensure all children achieve their full potential in a safe, happy and secure environment. We offer an exciting learning environment promoting high quality dialogue and a culture of intellectual curiosity. As Early Years practitioners, we aim to create ‘awe and wonder’ through play-based learning, which allows our children to be at the centre of their own development and education.
At KAPSH we believe that a positive, synergistic relationship between teachers and children are at the heart of education. Our team strive to ensure that every child feels supported and nurtured, as this dynamic creates an effective environment for learning to take place, with no child left behind. We aim to give ongoing new and challenging experiences, to ignite the children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, which prepares them for future academic excellence in Year 1.
Our EYFS Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed with the intent that every child is spiritual by nature and therefore possesses incredible capacity for learning and growth. The experiences we provide are wide ranging and open ended, to ensure we value all children’s interests. Provision is carefully planned with the vision that all children develop at their own pace. We ensure that every child can access our broad and balance curriculum, providing enrichment opportunities to enhance children’s experiences.
The curriculum design in EYFS comprises of the seven areas of learning and development, from the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. At KAPSH we follow an open-ended topic-based approach, using ‘I wonder’ questions to broaden children’s thinking processes, develop their speech and language skills, and to build confidence in their ability to express themselves. Our curriculum design has developed through focusing on children’s choices, activities and experiences, building on the knowledge they bring from their homes and communities. We aim to develop this essential knowledge and skills to support children when becoming educated citizens.
Our children are taught a bespoke Yoga, Music, Sanskrit and PRE-curriculum, delivered by fully qualified specialist teachers.
Partnerships with Parents
At KAPSH we believe that parents or co-educators play a vital role in promoting achievement. We welcome parental contributions and work closely with all our families to ensure they are supported throughout their child’s school journey. We arrange a home visit session to welcome all our Nursery and Reception children, also allowing our practitioners to understand your child’s individual needs. Our Early Years team are committed to ensuring parents feel empowered when supporting their children at home.
We work regularly with parents, providing bespoke next steps and suggested activities to consolidate and practise at home. Furthermore, we enjoy inviting parents into the classroom to stay and play, as well as observing our teaching inputs in Phonics and Maths. We encourage children to apply their learning to life outside of school. We provide parents with a weekly learning overview, in order to keep them in the know regarding learning for the week. In addition to this we schedule practical weekly home learning activities focusing on revisiting phonics sounds taught in the week, consolidating or extending maths skills and an engaging topic activity.Early Reading and Phonics
At KAPSH we have a well-organised system for teaching reading, which starts from the Early years. We believe that early reading ignites creativity, sparks curiosity and stimulates our children’s imagination. Our team aim to create confident and passionate early readers, using the Twinkl scheme to deliver a synthetic phonics programme. We deliver high quality phonics sessions that build and develop the skills and understanding children need to become effective, independent readers and writers.
In Reception, we strive to ensure that all children learn to read, focusing on in the moment interventions with children who need extra support. We have short and discrete daily phonics sessions which introduce grapheme-phoneme correspondence, blending and segmenting. Reading books are sent home on a weekly basis and connect closely to the phonics knowledge that our children are taught. Our Reception team spend time reading with the children throughout the week, focusing on decoding and comprehension skills. This ensures that teachers are able to quickly identify any gaps in understanding and provide in the moment interventions to ensure rapid progress.
At KAPSH we promote a love of reading; the children enjoy visiting the library once a week, celebrating storytelling week, world book day and engaging in poetry competitions. Furthermore, we love to bring our stories to life through weekly ‘hooks’ to create excitement around the text. This could be a giant’s footprints left in the classroom, a secret fairy door appearing in the garden, or even a treasure hunt! These hooks create awe and wonder in our classrooms and encourage children to engage in role play, building their confidence and communication and language skills, this also provides opportunities for children to get into character and act out real life roles or fictional performance from the variety of stories and texts that they have been learning about.
Mark Making and Writing
From the moment our children join us in Early Years, we encourage and promote mark making as it is the first stage of writing. Children enjoy creating different patterns, lines, textures and shapes. This may be on a piece of paper, on the ground, outside in the outdoor classroom, or on an object or surface. At KAPSH we believe that mark-making, in all forms needs to be valued, encouraged and discussed.
When encouraging children to write, we focus on pencil grip and control. The children have access to a variety of activities during the day to strengthen their fine motor skills, muscle control and hand-eye coordination. Making marks enables children to explore how they hold a mark making tool such as a pencil, crayon, paintbrush, and which grip and hands suits them best.
Children in Reception are always encouraged to apply their phonic knowledge to write simple regular words and make phonetically plausible attempts at more complex words. Furthermore, we teach children small rhymes to help them form letters. At KAPSH we have mark making trolley’s in each classroom, indoors and outdoors, giving the children the freedom to write as they choose, using the tools that they want. Children can often be seen writing letters, card, lists, storybooks and captions, which are links to their play. Furthermore, the children have access to sound mats and word mats to support them when writing. They are able to independently access these supportive resources when writing in any area of the Early Years Setting.
Early Maths
At KAPSH we believe that Early Maths provides vital life skills that help prepare our children for the wider world. Maths can be seen across all areas of the classroom, whether it is using a phone in the home corner, sorting objects or designing a tower in the construction area. We teach Maths using the ‘White Rose’ programme, with sessions taught daily in Reception. This mastery approach to Maths ensures that children have a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts whilst embracing Maths challenges with a positive can-do mindset.
In EYFS we focus on three concepts; problem solving, reasoning and fluency. The children enjoy the practical daily sessions, which are then extended, consolidated and challenged throughout their continuous provision. Our Early Years curriculum ensures that mathematical skills are also enhanced through the children’s interests. For example, cooking, playing in sand and water and exploring properties of objects all ensure meaningful contexts and the extension of mathematical thinking.
The outdoor environment plays a huge role when supporting the development of children’s mathematical skills. It enables the children to investigate shape, distance and measures. Furthermore, children have access to various resources where they can compare, sort and order natural materials. We also ensure that each child has been supported and assessed in a 1:1 session every week focusing on the topic and concept taught across the week.

Art and Design at KAPSH
The Art and Design curriculum will provide opportunities for all children to understand and access the creative process, express themselves, develop resilience and work independently to create good outcomes. Our curriculum links to our mission statement which means that we aim children to become better versions of themselves and make the world a better place. Our Art and Design curriculum is created to give pupils every opportunity to develop their artistic ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and the Indian culture. Introducing the children to the work of renowned artists gives them the opportunity to experience the amazing achievements of these great works of art and enrich their cultural capital.

The intent of our Art education is to equip children with the essential skills, knowledge, vocabulary and understanding to convey their individual responses confidently and independently to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. We envisage art and design to ignite children’s passion and imagination as it is a means of personal expression, providing valuable opportunities for them to reflect upon their own work and that of others with increasing sensitivity.
Design Technology at KAPSH
It is the intent of Krishna Avanti Primary School for Design Technology to be taught in all year groups through one topic per half- term. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
We promote, where appropriate, the implementation of cross-curricular links with other subject areas/themes – where the children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness. Pupils are also encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers, building up their resilience to solve problems posed by and developing and building a repertoire of strategies in which to use.

English at KAPSH
At Krishna Avanti Primary School, reading lies at the heart of the curriculum, and we believe reading underpins success across all aspects of the curriculum. It is our intention to create confident, fluent, and lifelong readers that not only read for pleasure but also possess strong oracy and vocabulary skills.
Through developing oracy and book talk alongside the basic skills of decoding, children’s ability to learn new language effectively develops alongside their reading attainment. Through accessing carefully selected rich texts that are both read and read aloud our children have multiple exposures to vocabulary and second and third tier words. Fluency, comprehension, and pleasure are the core values in our approach to developing successful readers. As a result, we create lifelong learners who will take their love of reading to the next stage of their education.

At Krishna Avanti Primary School we believe in a holistic approach to the teaching of English. Our vision is to provide children with opportunities to develop their passion and skillset for reading, writing and oracy in a cohesive way.
Our English curriculum is carefully planned so that children become confident and creative communicators, who will be able to use these skills effectively in the future. We teach English so that children have the tools to express themselves confidently and clearly in the diverse world in which they live.
Writing is embedded through our English lessons and across our wider curriculum. A core text is carefully selected to give children access to a range of texts which will expose them to rich vocabulary.
Each learning journey is carefully planned to enable children to be immersed into their text, analyse, and generate ideas, which leads to the children composing a piece of writing. Within the learning journey, opportunities for reflection are woven throughout.
Phonics at KAPSH
At KAPSH, our children’s phonics journey starts in Nursery till Year 2, with the belief that Phonics provides children with vital foundations to become a fluent reader. We use Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) as our Systematic, Synthetic Phonics Programme (SSP). ELS is designed to help every child learn to read quickly and confidently by teaching them the link between letters and the sounds they make. It is high quality and robust in its purpose, with a clear, structured progression through the programme, allowing all our children to meet or exceed the expected standard. The ELS Phonics approach is rigorous, multisensory, and inclusive, also making learning more accessible and enjoyable for learners with SEND.
The programme is built on a few key principles:
-
Consistency: Every lesson follows the same clear structure so that children know what to expect and can focus on their learning.
-
Clarity: Phonics is taught explicitly and systematically, ensuring that no child is left behind.
-
Practice and application: Children regularly revisit and apply what they’ve learned in reading and writing, helping them to develop fluency and confidence.
-
Keep up, not catch up: Daily assessment allows teachers to identify children who need extra support, with targeted interventions to help them stay on track.
-
Strong foundations: By mastering the essential sounds early on, children develop the skills they need to become fluent, confident readers and lifelong learners.
With ELS, there is a daily phonics lesson where the teacher teaches a new sound, or reviews sounds learned earlier in the week. This is shown to the class on the whiteboard.
Children learn the letters that represent the sounds. They are then asked to read words and sentences with the new sounds in. Children will also practise writing the letters that represent the sounds.
ELS Phonics lessons are also supported by weekly decodable books, where the children can apply the skills, they have learnt in their phonics lessons. At KAPSH we offer our children a variety of decodable books with various genres from the ELS, Word Sparks Collection and Project X Hero Academy range. These decodable books are matched to the children’s phonics phases. In conjunction with the teaching of phonics, to consolidate children’s phonics skills, we provide a variety of phonics-based activities, appropriate to individuals levels, to support children at home.

Geography at KAPSH
Understanding of the world that we live in
Click here to view KAPSH approach to Geography
We believe that the teaching of Geography should acknowledge the pivotal role human beings can play in securing the future of our planet. Here at KAPSH, in line with Avanti way, we inspire our pupils to become spiritually compassionate changemakers, understanding the deep connections between people, places, and the environment while taking thoughtful action to protect our planet for future generations.
We begin by providing opportunities for pupils to articulate their rationale behind this subject and to develop deeper understanding of the world that they live in. Within our knowledge rich curriculum, pupils are given time to build on the geographical vocabulary they have learnt, deepen their geographical understanding of key concepts such as cultural diversity and global citizenship. We inspire to in still a love for enquiry and agency in our pupils, motivating them to take an active part in contributing to and growing up to be conscious and connected global citizens.
At Krishna Avanti Primary school, our aim is to inspire all pupils with a sense of curiosity, awe and wonder about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We aim to equip them with knowledge about diverse places, people, and resources, together with a deeper understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We want our pupils to be able to look further into how this interaction is interconnected and to be able to explain this using correct vocabulary.
We build on their skills include reading maps, atlases, globes, and digital/computer mapping, using compasses, grid references, symbols and keys as well as observing, collecting, and analysing data from fieldwork. In addition, we aim to provide pupils with an all-inclusive, stimulating, and enriching curriculum through real-life experiences such as local fieldwork, residential trips and exploring the school environment through nature trails etc.

Within an ever-changing world, Krishna Avanti Primary School understands and values the importance of teaching History from a young age. The History curriculum teaches pupils about the world in which they live and how it has changed over time by building on prior knowledge, introducing new vocabulary, and developing historical skills following the National Curriculum.
History at KAPSH is taught in line with Rosenshine’s principles, following a clearly sequenced and progressive program of study based on the National Curriculum objectives, so that pupils can achieve depth in their learning. Using CUSP resources, we have implemented the six phases of teaching within every lesson which forms a strong foundation starting from connect leading to thinking- hard challenges. Opportunities for moral growth and spiritual insight are underpinned throughout this curriculum thus making the world a better place.
Our History curriculum aims to foster a curiosity and passion for the past that our children will take with them into secondary education and beyond. Our teaching of history draws upon prior learning, wherever the content is taught. For example, in the EYFS, pupils may learn about the past and present through daily activities, exploring through change, and understanding more about the lives of others through books and visitors as well as their own experiences. These experiences are drawn upon and used to position new learning in KS1.
The structure is built around the principles of advancing cumulative knowledge, chronology, change through cause and consequence, as well as making connections within and throughout periods of time studied. Our History modules are chosen carefully so that our children can develop a sense of period and acquire an understanding of the relationship between the different periods of history studied. In KS2, our curriculum is taught in chronological order, to allow children to continuously build on their prior knowledge and develop a strong chronological foundation. In History lessons, children develop knowledge of key facts, significant people, places, and cultures in history. Retrieval practice, knowledge organisers, and revision of previous learning allows children to be secure in this foundational knowledge.
Our history curriculum considers a variety of perspectives, including political, economic, religious, social, technological and cultural. Wherever possible, links with other curriculum subjects such as Art and Science allows for our children to strengthen their historical understanding. Our children learn about a range of historical topics, including local history, British history, and World history. All children are given opportunities to study the history of diverse people and cultures, both at special times of the year, such as Black History Month, and within regular lessons.
Children are given access to increasingly complex primary and secondary sources to support their learning. They develop an understanding of the reliability of sources, and the idea that there may be different versions of the past. Children are introduced to archaeology and start to understand how artefacts are used to understand ancient cultures. We believe that every child has the right to study a broad curriculum. Our SEND and EAL children are supported to access the curriculum in a variety of ways, including scaffolding, teacher support, and the use of Knowledge notes to reduce the cognitive overload.

At Krishna Avanti Primary School we believe that mathematics is a tool that equips the children to understand and change the world.
To be fully integrated into society we all need to be able to communicate mathematically, which includes being able to reason, solve problems, and to think abstractly. The intention of our curriculum is to implement a mastery approach to teaching and learning which will provide all children with a rich, balanced, and progressive curriculum. Confidence, resilience and perseverance are encouraged to enable them to believe in themselves as mathematicians.
At the core of our curriculum is the concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach to maths. Our children are taught and encouraged to explain their choice of methods and develop their mathematical reasoning skills whilst recognising that mathematics underpins much of our daily lives. Teaching is underpinned by methodical curriculum design and supported by carefully crafted lessons and resources to foster deep conceptual and procedural knowledge.
Please view our calculation policy to see this in action. Mathematics is taught to whole classes, where the majority of the pupils’ progress through the curriculum content at the same pace with opportunities to deepening their understanding and application. Underpinning the journey for our young mathematicians is fluency, reasoning and problem solving. This journey plays a central role where learning is carefully designed to include variation, fluency development and key understanding of underlying mathematical concepts.
Maths Week 2024
At KAPSH, we had a fantastic time celebrating Maths Week, where we inspired our children to see the relevance of maths in everyday life! This year’s theme focused on ‘reasoning and problem-solving challenges,’ with KS2 pupils designing and leading engaging investigations for KS1 students.
This exciting initiative not only allowed children to explore mathematical concepts in a fun and interactive way but also helped them develop essential leadership and teamwork skills. By working together to tackle complex problems, they strengthened their logical thinking, creativity, and confidence in applying maths beyond the classroom.

At Krishna Avanti Primary School, our Music Curriculum intends to inspire creativity, self-expression and encourages our children on their musical journeys as well as giving them opportunities to connect with others. We hope to foster a lifelong love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences and igniting a passion for music. By listening and responding to different musical styles, finding their voices as singers and performers and as composers, all will enable them to become confident, reflective musicians.
‘Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity’ (The National Curriculum)
At KAPSH we work in partnership with Harrow Music Services, with specialist Music teachers offering weekly music sessions. We have carefully designed our progressive curriculum using the Music’s Cool (TM) resources. The music curriculum ensures students sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in classroom activities as well as morning worship, various concerts and performances, the learning of instruments, and the joining of musical ensembles. The elements of music are taught in classroom lessons so that children are able to use the language of music to discuss it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed.

Physical Education (P.E.)
Click here to read more about our PE Curriculum.
Click here to view our approach to PE
Our intent for Physical Education goes beyond the program of study for the National Curriculum, and we have a desire for this curriculum area. We want our pupils to:
-
Have a life-long passion for sport and physical activity – leading to friendships, teammates, better health, more comprehensive social experiences.
-
Be keen to attempt various activities – allowing pupils the opportunity to find their love of other sports and physical activities.
-
Identify their own and others safety – being able to swim and being safe in the water and by completing their cycling proficiency.
-
Communicate and work together – building relationships and the vocabulary to express themselves appropriately.
We hope to achieve this through a no ceiling and adaptive planning approach, which meets the needs of all pupils, including pupils with SEND and the most able pupils.
Physical education gives us so many opportunities to develop the whole child. It provides some pupils with the chance to excel where they may struggle in other areas and offers pupils opportunities outside of the classroom. We also hope to teach pupils that P.E. can help improve concentration in other curriculum areas, make links between theory and practice, deepen understanding, and maintain and extend attention.
At Krishna Avanti, we are proud to offer a broad and balanced Physical Education curriculum. The children take part in weekly PE lessons, Yoga and take part in the Daily Mile. Physical Education refers to curriculum time lessons that aim to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum; however, running alongside this is physical activity (any opportunity to be active in the day) and community sports (competitive events both internally and against other schools).

Growth
All aspects of physical education and physical activity aim to support the physical development of all pupils. The physical development of pupils can have a massive impact on a child's life, opportunities, and activities. We feel strongly that physical activity can also link with mental health. We aim to use physical education to develop the child.
Involvement and Resilience
A range of physical activities, both competitive and non-competitive, give pupils a meaningful life-long love of sports. As well as allowing pupils to experience competition. Throughout the year, we offer a variety of enrichment activities including netball, tennis, cricket and football. We also value inter-school matches to aid healthy competition. We encourage all children to take part in the Daily Mile, as well as active learning within lessons, as a way of promoting additional physical activity in school.
Responsibility and Relationships
Physical education, physical activity and school sports aim to promote fair play and good sporting behaviour. We also hope to develop empathy and compassion for others through evaluation and teamwork. In all year groups, pupils are taught safely and explicitly to identify their own risks: leading to pupils managing and assessing their own and their peers' risks.
Diversity and Cultural Capital
Physical education, activity and school sports should be inclusive to all, and at Krishna Avanti, we ensure that all our lessons are inclusive. The ultimate aim is that pupils leave Krishna Avanti Primary School with a knowledge of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a life-long love of sport and physical activity with pupils taking part at sport to a high standard.

Our intention is that when children leave Krishna Avanti, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. Click here to read more about our PRE curriculum.
Click here to view KAPSH approach to PRE
Our Philosophy, Religion and Ethics curriculum is unique to Avanti. Its emphasis on critical thinking and mindfulness makes it ground breaking. It gives pupils opportunities to:
-
deepen their own spiritual insight
-
consider the world’s major religious beliefs
-
deepen their knowledge of the distinctive Hindu tradition which inspires the school’s ethos
-
celebrate the common positive values which all faiths share
PRE plays a large role in the development of pupils’ spiritual insight. “The basic principle of the living condition is that we have a general propensity to love someone. No one can live without loving someone else. This propensity is present in every living being. Even an animal like a tiger has this loving propensity at least in a dormant stage, and it is certainly present in the human beings. The missing point, however, is where to repose our love so that everyone can become happy.” – Srila Prabhupada.

What does PRE look like in EYFS and KS1?
In EYFS and KS1 our young philosophers engage in a variety of learning activities to explore the school values of empathy, self-discipline, respect, integrity, courage and gratitude.
Children will learn stories and recite songs/mantras to do with key texts such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Chaitanya Charitamrita.
They will also learn about spiritual personalities such as Lord, Rama, Lord Krishna, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the different avatars of Krishna.
A range of mediums such as song, dance, games, drama and writing activities help children to understand Vaishnava culture and philosophy at this early age.
What does PRE look like in KS2?
In KS2 children build on their earlier learning and progress further with key spiritual texts such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita, Nectar of Instruction and more Vedic texts. Our curriculum underpins key themes such as, God & The Self, God & the World and The Self & The World. Children are taught how to think deeper, meditate, ask philosophical questions and communicate with the divine. This is done through a range of lessons and units of work which encompass drama, debate, meditation, writing activities including prayers, self-reflection tasks, reciting Bhagavad Gita quotes and understanding their meaning as well as opportunities to collaborate as a team.
Children explore big philosophical questions based on the three modes of material nature (goodness, passion & ignorance), karma, the nature of the divine, creation & destruction, justice, life & death and much more. All of the learning leads Avanti pupils to enhance their critical thinking as well as develop their spiritual insight, which helps to form their character as an individual.

Right to withdraw your child from PRE.
Everything we do at Avanti aims to inspire spiritually compassionate changemakers. Our distinctive philosophy, religion and ethics curriculum intends to achieve this aim: through cultivating curiosity to explore life’s big questions with open hearts and minds, through religious learning to foster humility, love, and a sense of interconnectedness with all living beings and divinity, and through ethics to shape conscious changemakers who embody virtues and think critically. In so doing, we equip our children and young people with the tools to lead meaningful, joyful lives, and make a positive contribution in the world.
While parents and carers do have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of PRE (by contacting the school office), we believe that participation can greatly enrich children and young people’s understanding of the world and those around them.

The three-fold path of the Avanti Way are core to the teaching of all subjects, including Science. Our Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We strive to equip our children with sufficient knowledge, concepts, skills, and positive attitudes to understand that Science has changed our lives and the direction of society whilst increasing their awareness that the contribution we make is vital to the world’s future prosperity. We prepare our children to be global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community.
Science teaching at Krishna Avanti Primary School Harrow aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and an understanding of the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
