school meals

School meals are prepared and cooked on site by the catering providers, Govindas. Please click here to see Govinda’s website for further information.

An important part of our ethos is the provision of hot, fresh, nutritious meals. Sharing tasty, healthy school lunches is an integral part of the educational experience at an Avanti school. It’s also an opportunity to enhance social and communication skills, ensuring lunchtimes are a positive experience for all. School staff often enjoy taking lunch with pupils, creating a family atmosphere.

The lunch meals cooked on-site are vegetarian (in line with the faith ethos of the school) and half-termly menus are also available on the School’s website.

If the lunch provision on offer does not meet your child’s needs, or if your child has specific diet requirements/preferences, please do speak to us so that we can provide for your child accordingly. We encourage parents to visit the school to sample the school lunches in order to satisfy themselves with the quality of provision.

Meals can be designed to meet the needs of children with specific allergies.

We strongly encourage parents who have financial constraints to apply for Free School Meals via the online LGFL link below.  Updates received to the school will be kept confidential.

Free School Meals

Did you know that every child who is known to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) allows their school to gain extra funding through Pupil Premium Grant to ensure that the pupils eligible to receive the grant achieve the highest standards and do not fall behind.  This funding is used to improve staffing and facilities that benefit the children. To find out if you qualify for the Pupil Premium Grant, use the Free School Meals eligibility checker by visiting http://fsm.lgfl.net. Once you have accessed the website, you will be able to quickly and easily check if you are entitled. It gives you an immediate “yes” or “no” response and may notify the school. IF YOUR CHILD WAS ENTITLED TO FREE SCHOOL MEALS LAST YEAR, YOU MUST STILL RE-APPLY USING THE ABOVE WEBSITE. It is quick and easy to find out if you are eligible and it only takes a moment! If you are eligible for FSM please inform the school office by email.

Menu Planning

The pupil’s voice is taken into consideration when developing the termly school lunch menu. Govinda’s will also take into consideration parents’ views on school lunches.

The school office will send termly menus by email communication.

Please remember we are a nut-free school and some children have severe airborne allergies to Nuts.

Children will have access to drinking water at all times but parents are requested to send in a water bottle to keep at the school, especially during the summer when the weather is hot.

We Are A Nut Free School

Krishna Avanti Primary School aim to be a Nut-Free school. We do not allow nuts or nut products in school.

The school aims to protect children who have allergies to nuts yet also help them, as they grow up, to take responsibility for what foods they can eat and to be aware of where they may be put at risk.

Our “Nut-Free guidance” means that the following items should not be brought into school:

  •  Packs of nuts

  •  Peanut butter or Nutella sandwiches

  •  Fruit and cereal bars that contain nuts

  • Chocolate bars or sweets that contain nuts

  • Sesame seed rolls and breads containing sesame seeds (children allergic to nuts may also have a severe reaction to sesame)

  • Cakes made with nuts

  • Any home cooked meals for packed lunches that are made with nuts

We do not to use nuts in any of our food prepared on site at our school. Our suppliers provide us with nut-free products. However, we cannot guarantee that all food is free from nut traces.

What types of food are nuts?

  • Almonds

  • Cashew nuts

  • Hazelnut

  • Pistachio

  • Walnuts

  • Brazil nuts

  • Nut oils

  • Peanuts

Parents and carers must notify staff if their child has any known or suspected allergy to nuts and provide all medical and necessary information. This will be added to your child’s care plan and if necessary, a meeting organised with the school first aid lead.

Homemade snacks or party food contributions must have a label detailing all ingredients present.

The school requests that parents and carers observe the nut-free guidance and therefore do not include nuts, or any traces of nuts, in any food that they send to school. All children are regularly reminded about the good hygiene practice of washing hands before and after eating which helps to reduce the risk of secondary contamination. Likewise, children are reminded and carefully supervised to minimise the act of food sharing with their friends.

Thank you for your help in making our school safe for all children.
